Three Liberal Jews have been named as among the most important young people in Anglo-Jewry, as part of the Jewish News’ and Jewish Leadership Council’s Thirty Under 30 countdown.

Student Rabbi Deborah Blausten came ninth in the prestigious list, which attracted hundreds of nominations. Deborah is a student at Leo Baeck College and is spending this year as minister to York Liberal Jewish Community.

The judges said: “At her rabbinical placement in York, Deborah has helped to revitalise and revolutionise the young Jewish community there.”

Abi Jacobi came 12th in the list, praised for her work with Liberal Judaism, our communities and Limmud. The paper noted that this year Abi will be Limmud Conference chair, spreading her time between this key community role and her role at RightsInfo UK.

The Jewish News added: “Abi’s passion for social justice and cross-communal work contributes to the vibrancy of British Jewry, from which many will benefit in the coming years.”

Graham Carpenter was ranked 28th. A Liberal Judaism officer and former LJY-Netzer movement worker, Graham is the new generations coordinator for the New Israel Fund where he “is a key player in Israel education for young people across the country”.

The judges highlighted Graham’s role in the Liberal movement, noting: “Graham was previously a youth worker for Liberal Judaism before becoming the youngest trustee on its board and pouring time and commitment into this demanding voluntary role, organising the annual conference and spending time working on the core liturgy and other musical projects.”

Liberal Jews missing out on the Top 30, but singled out for praise by the judges include former LJY-Netzer movement workers Sam Grant and Gabriel Webber, as well as Elliot Steinberg – who is now programme manager for the Council of Christians and Jews.

Liberal Judaism student chaplain Rabbi Leah Jordan and officer Robin Moss were also commended by the paper – along with members Charlotte Fischer and Claire Farhi – but all are over 30, so not eligible for the main list.

Other young Liberals noted for being “high fliers” in the Jewish community by the paper include Daisy Bogod, Ben Combe, Zach Confino & Jonty Leibowitz.
