From children walking the walls of York to a Cockney Megillah reading in Finchley, Purim 5777 was an action packed one in Liberal Jewish communities.
Liberal Judaism’s newest congregation at East London & Essex Liberal Synagogue celebrated their first Purim, with our oldest, The Liberal Jewish Synagogue, inviting Jewish and Muslim storytellers in to regale guests with tales for an upside-down world from both faiths.
Nottingham Liberal Synagogue’s Horrible Histories Purim spiel included the return of Cilla Black and Blind Date, while Gloucestershire Liberal Jewish Community used materials and accessories donated by members for their costumes and displays.
At Bedfordshire Progressive Synagogue, the ‘Haman Din’ was so loud that it got chair David Young’s dogs barking, and his cats chose to stay out in the wet until it was all over.
One thing every Purim service and party had in common, including at The Liberal Synagogue Elstree (pictured), was plenty of hamantaschen and wonderful fancy dress.
