Hours: Two sessions a month, for ten months each year, usually on Sunday afternoon & evenings 5-8pm & 8-10pm and four hours a month planning/liaising with families, making a total of nine hours a month. One of these sessions will include staying overnight at the synagogue with adult support. There may be other ad hoc sessions as agreed with the youth worker.
Salary: £225 per Sunday (£25 an hour) including planning time. There will be additional payments for other sessions as agreed.
Kol Chai Reform Jewish Community is looking for a paid youth professional to join our team, to plan and run our monthly youth club, Sababa, for young people in Years 7-10 and initiate a new youth gathering for older teenagers in Years 11-13. You may also be asked to train and work with teenage helpers for Sababa (madrichim, aged 16-18years). This is a fantastic opportunity for someone motivated and enthusiastic to work with young people and become a key part of our community.
The role will require liaising with madrichim, RSY-Netzer and consulting with the young people. The successful candidate will have a necessary understanding of safeguarding and experience of planning and running youth activities. They will be able to deal with a variety of situations and be able to work independently as well as motivate and empower a team.
The role involves:
- Planning and running a session, on a Sunday afternoon, once a month for Years 7-10’s along with teenage helpers (aged 16-18).
- During those sessions, help the young people to come up with ideas for further activities
- Meet with older teenagers (Years 11-13) to devise a new youth gathering for this age group and manage it.
- Liaise with RSY
- Training and working with teenage helpers
- Using the facilities available, e.g., table tennis, film projector, kitchen, large car park, during the sessions
- Collecting small payment from the participants each week to pay for pizza, snacks etc.
- Organise pizza, snack and drinks for the young people
- Opening the building and locking up safely, closing all windows and using the burglar alarm.
- Consider and request in a timely manner any necessary equipment for sessions
- Complete safeguarding training and first aid training where necessary
- Working closely with parent stakeholders and the Rabbi (line manager)
Person Specification:
- Experience working with teenagers
- Knowledge and experience of planning and running youth activities
- Working knowledge of Jewish culture and understanding of Reform Judaism
- Ability to work independently and be able to motivate and empower a team of young leaders
- Excellent organisational skills
- An understanding of safeguarding
- Enjoy empowering young people and have patience, tolerance and a positive attitude.
Successful candidates will be subject to an enhanced DBS check.
