Rabbi Dr Israel Mattuck (1884 – 1954), Britain’s first Liberal Rabbi, was one of his generation’s most inspiring orators, and worked alongside Claude Montefiore and Lily Montagu to establish the Jewish Religious Union (now Liberal Judaism) and the World Union for Progressive Judaism.
Israel Mattuck challenged his listeners to face the issues of the day in the context of the purpose of Jewish existence and the future of religion.
This session will explore Mattuck’s radical idelogy through extracts from his sermons and writings delivered between 1912 and 1954.
