Forty Mosaic Jewish Community members – made up from its Reform, Liberal and Masorti Synagogues – attended the launch of the Mosaic Social Action Hub.
Welcoming them, Rabbi Anthony Lazarus Magrill emphasised that while services and events are important, social action should be seen as the true essence of what a synagogue stands for.
Presentations were made by three charities chosen for their important work in the local community. They offered a range of opportunities for Mosaic members to volunteer their time and skills to contribute to the welfare of local people positively.
First was Julian Saunders, CEO of Firm Foundation. This charity operates in Harrow and focuses on the needs of the homeless. Breakfast and lunchtime drop-in centres have the greatest need for voluntary help, along with the Winter Night Shelter, which opens on January 1st. This shelter has been supporting the homeless during the coldest months for 14 years.
Next, was Rosalind Bluestone MBE, founder and CEO of GoodsforGood. Based in northwest London, they’re looking for donations of surplus goods from shops, businesses, and individuals. In particular, they want sorters, packers, and drivers, and she invited Mosaic members to a ‘taster’ session.
Peter Phillips, founder and CEO of Volunteers on Wheels, was the final speaker. His charity bridges the logistical gap between supermarkets and shops for those facing food poverty and insecurity. Peter stressed the urgent need for drivers and ‘shleppers’, especially since Barnet Council has ended its funding to the Barnet Food Hub.
