Liberal Judaism’s series of Open House Shabbats continues this Saturday (29 October) at 10.45am with a double celebration at The South London Liberal Synagogue (SLLS).
The community will be marking both Liberal Judaism’s 120th anniversary and a member’s adult batmitzvah.
Members and friends of Liberal Judaism are invited to attend in person or via Zoom. Just email office@southlondon.org to confirm attendance and/or receive the link.
The service will take place at the SLLS synagogue building in Prentis Road, which has been the home to the community since 1938. The congregation was founded in 1929 (the 90th anniversary celebrations are pictured).
The Open House Shabbat initiative will see each Liberal Judaism congregation hold at least one Shabbat during the year, for which they will open their doors – whether in-person, online or both – to the rest of the Liberal Jewish world and beyond.
More about The South London Liberal Synagogue:
The South London Liberal Synagogue is the second oldest Liberal Judaism community and the only synagogue in Lambeth. It has a lively and welcoming community from all ages and backgrounds, and celebrates the diversity of its membership.
Led by Rabbi Nathan Godleman, services are joyous, including a strong musical element, ritual and humour (sometimes inadvertent).
The congregation has returned to the refurbished sanctuary with relish after lockdown, though the synagogue now streams services on a Zoom link as well, to ensure less mobile members are included. There is step free access via a street level lift.
The synagogue is privileged to offer a home to a refugee family, through the Abraham’s Tent project. The building also houses a nursery and dancing classes during the week so it is an asset to the wider community as well as to the congregation.
