Liberal Judaism’s leadership attended two major national Chanukah events this week.
Chief Executive Officer Rabbi Charley Baginsky represented our movement at a special celebration at No10 Downing Street (pictured above with Board of Deputies’ President Marie van der Zyl).
The event was hosted by Prime Minister Boris Johnson, who paid tribute to the “amazing contribution” that British Jews make to the country.
Charley was also joined by Liberal Judaism Chair Ruth Seager – and other prominent members of our community including Rabbi Tanya Sakhnovich – for a reception in Parliament, hosted by the Board of Deputies of British Jews.
Political leaders from across the political divide came together for the Chanukah celebration including Home Secretary Priti Patel, Leader of the Opposition Sir Keir Starmer, Liberal Democrat education spokesperson Munira Wilson and the SNP’s Westminster Leader Ian Blackford.
Charley said: “Liberal Judaism is an essential voice, not only in the Jewish community but in the world at large. It’s a privilege to represent our movement at these events which are a real tribute to the valuable role of the Jewish community in British society.”
Ruth added: “It was truly heartwarming to hear parliamentarians celebrate the contribution that Jews make to the UK, acknowledge the antisemitism that is prevalent and explain what they are doing to protect the Jewish community. The reception was also a really great bash… I love a party!”
Earlier this week, Charley became the first Progressive rabbi, and the first woman, to light the Chanukah candles in Trafalgar Square. You can read about that here.
