Haiti Appeal - WJR

On Friday morning, a 7.2 magnitude earthquake hit Haiti, killing at least 2,000 people and injuring more than 12,000.

World Jewish Relief will be responding, working with a local partner to meet urgent humanitarian needs. Liberal Judaism fully supports its efforts.

The earthquake came at a time when many Haitians would have still been at home. It was a shallow depth quake with a number of aftershocks and has caused extensive destruction.

Haiti is still reeling from the earthquake that killed upwards of 100,000 people in 2010 and the hurricane that devastated vast swathes of the country in 2016. Its economy is in ruins and it remains in the midst of political crisis.

World Jewish Relief has been working in Haiti through an immensely committed, capable and trustworthy partner, Haiti Survie. As British Jewry’s leading humanitarian agency, WJR is well placed to ensure our community can effectively meet the emergency and recovery needs of some of those affected.

Liberal Judaism CEO Rabbi Charley Baginsky said: “Jewish tradition reminds us time and time again that when others are suffering we cannot sit at home and pretend it is not happening. World Jewish Relief has this value at its core and it is incumbent on us to support their campaign to assist the people of Haiti following another earthquake.

“We can offer our prayers, but for those that can, this is a chance to help World Jewish Relief be there to offer care and healing and perhaps most importantly empower Haitians to rebuild in a safer and better way.”
