Along with our partners at Citizens UK, and activists and politicians from across the political spectrum, Liberal Judaism welcomes the Government’s acceptance of the amendment by Lord Dubs to allow unaccompanied refugee children into the UK.

This is a big change in principle and down to the hard work of many people over many years – lobbying, campaigning and personally showing that refugees really are welcome in Britain.

This has been especially true in Liberal Judaism, from grassroots community initiatives to fulfil the Jewish principle of ‘welcoming the stranger’ to our own Rabbi Harry Jacobi telling his story as a child refugee from Nazi Germany to highlight the issues faced by those fleeing war and persecution today.

But our work does not end here. We need to keep up the momentum and pressure to make sure the principle accepted by the Government is now put into practice.

We must ensure that refugee children arrive here safely, in large numbers, and are welcomed when they do.
