Liberal Judaism is proud to support the international #ShowUpForShabbat initiative, showing solidarity against hatred and honouring the memory of those who died in the horrific attack on the Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.
Joining all denominations of Judaism, from all around the world, we are asking for Liberal Jews, their family and friends – of all faiths and none – to attend a synagogue this coming Friday night and/or Saturday (2-3 November).
The initiative was launched by the American Jewish Committee and is backed by the Board of Deputies of British Jews, Jewish Leadership Council and all of the UK’s synagogal movements.
Liberal Judaism’s senior rabbi, Rabbi Danny Rich, said: “Our first thoughts to go the families of the bereaved and injured. The memory of those who died is best served by our resolve to practice our Judaism and our determination to challenge antisemitism, anti-refugee rhetoric and all forms of racism wherever and whenever they rear their ugly head.
“Whatever your type of Jewish affiliation, I am encouraging you attend a synagogue this Shabbat and reassure you that all Liberal communities will make you very welcome.
“I have been strengthened not only by the solidarity of the Jewish community in this time but by the genuine outpouring of support from Muslims, Christians, atheists and others – any and all of them will also be welcome in our synagogues.”
