Last night the Liberal Jewish Synagogue proudly hosted the Progressive hustings for the election for the new President of the Board of Deputies. The event was chaired by the convenors of the Progressive Deputies, Karen Newman and Tony Seymour.
The four candidates were Marie van der Zyl, Sheila Gewolb, Edwin Shuker and Simon Hochhauser. They were all asked questions from the Deputies, observed by other attendees and those watching on live stream.
Rabbi Charley Baginsky, Liberal Judaism’s Director of Strategy and Partnerships said: “This was an excellent opportunity for our members to understand the need to be represented on the Board and have their voices heard. It was very interesting to be able to get a sense of whether the candidates understand and appreciate the Progressive context. I very much hope that whoever wins this election will continue to prioritise communication with the Progressive world.”
“Over the past few weeks especially, the Progressive community has witnessed, alongside the Jewish community as a whole, the ways in which we are represented very publicly by the Board of Deputies. If we want our voice to be heard then we have to be represented round the table.”
Liberal Judaism reelected its own deputies Lauren Keiles and Stuart MacDonald, who is the current Treasurer and his position remains uncontested in the upcoming elections. We are very pleased to have such excellent Deputies representing the Liberal
voice.
