Rabbi John Desmond Rayner CBE (1924 – 2005) was born in Berlin and left Germany in 1939 on one of the last Kindertransports. He lost both parents and many other family members in the Holocaust.
Serving both the South London Liberal Synagogue and The Liberal Jewish Synagogue, he later became a Life President of Liberal Judaism.
He is best known for his prayer books, Service of the Heart, Gate of Repentance and Siddur Lev Chadash. He also wrote many acclaimed works on Jewish ethics, progressive halakhah, Israel and the contemporary events of the time in which he lived.
This session will focus on the life and legacy of Rabbi John Rayner and the place of his thinking in Liberal Judaism. In particular, it will explore if his approach to balancing the universal and the particular can be useful for our thinking about the future approaches of Progressive Judaism.
