Progressive Clergy on Brew Monday

Progressive clergy put the kettle on for Brew Monday, the annual day that encourages everyone to reach out for a cuppa and a catch-up with those they care about.

Pioneered by The Samaritans and brought to faith communities by Mitzvah Day, Brew Monday aims to dispel the myth that the third Monday in January is the most depressing of the year

The goals of the day are to give people the chance to connect over a hot (or cold) drink, to combat the loneliness and isolation that many feel at this time, and to reduce stigma around mental health.

Those taking part (pictured L-R) included Progressive Judaism Co-Lead Rabbi Josh Levy, Leo Baeck College Principal Rabbi Professor Deborah Kahn-Harris, Cantor Tamara Wolfson of Edgware & Hendon Reform Synagogue, and Progressive Judaism Co-Lead Rabbi Charley Baginsky.

Rabbi Deborah said: “Grabbing a cup of something with a friend allows us to check in and support each other. Initiatives such as Brew Monday are vital to highlight the importance of mental health awareness.”

Cantor Tamara added: “During the coldest and darkest times of the year, it is even more important to connect with friends and family and bring light and warmth into each other’s lives. Text a friend you haven’t seen in a while, call a family member just to say hello, or take a tea break with a coworker. The little things make a big difference.”
