More than 400 people have registered to take part in the Progressive Judaism Education Hub 2025 – the unique online series delving into the rich history and core values of our Judaism.

The next Zoom event is on Thursday (23 January) at 7pm when Rabbi Mark Goldsmith will explore the history and achievements of Rabbi Ignaz Maybaum (pictured), whose writings laid the foundations for the development of Progressive Judaism in Europe after the Holocaust.

Rabbi Ignaz Maybaum (1897 – 1976) was born in Vienna, studied for the rabbinate in Berlin and served several congregations in Germany. He was arrested by the Gestapo in 1935, but later escaped to England.

A scholar and theologian, he became the first rabbi of Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue in 1948 and the first lecturer at Leo Baeck College on Comparative Religion, Theology and Homiletics.

His books The Face of God After Auschwitz, Man and Catastrophe, Happiness Outside the State, and Trialogue Between Jew, Christian and Muslim were foundational texts for the development of Progressive Judaism in Europe after the Second World War and have helped to develop the relationship between faiths and between Israel and the Diaspora.

Rabbi Ignaz Maybaum retired from what was then the Edgware and District Reform Synagogue in 1963 and died in 1976. Rabbi Mark now serves as the Senior Rabbi at EHRS and also teaches one of the same subjects at Leo Baeck College.

Over 10 weekly hour-long Zoom sessions, we’ll explore the lives and legacies of 10 significant individuals who have shaped the development of the Judaism we know and love today. Sessions take place on Thursday nights from 7-8pm via Zoom. They are free and open to all – and you can take part in as few or as many as you wish.
