Lily Montagu (1873-1963), one of the three ‘M’s who helped to found Liberal Judaism, was a formidable Victorian lady who took her duties to the poor and vulnerable very seriously, especially the girls working in the rag trade and exposed to men in the sweaty workshops around Soho.
She was also a person of deep faith who came to realise that there was no place for women in the Orthodox Judaism practised in her family, especially by her father. That is why she set out to create places where women could learn about Judaism and be a valued part of the religious scene.
Her views and her work found a place both in the creation of Liberal Judaism in the UK and the establishing of a worldwide network of Progressive communities. Lily Montagu is a fascinating person whose history should be explored by all.
