This year, instead of the usual additional Yom Kippur service, Norwich Liberal Jewish Community set out on a unique journey of learning and exploration.

The congregation organised a special event titled ‘A Walk of Jewish Norwich,’ led by one of the members, Stella Koenick. This was followed by a study session focussing on Machloket, the tradition of constructive debate.

They began their day with the walk through Jewish Norwich. Members were led through the historic streets, sharing stories and insights about the Jewish community’s rich heritage in the area. One of the highlights was a stop at the stone bench, a part of a unique project known as the Norwich Book Benches.

Among the celebrated books and authors, they found the name of Meir Ben Elijah of Norwich, a medieval Jewish poet whose works have left a lasting legacy, leading to a key moment of reflection and tribute.

This was followed by the study session, led by Ba’al Tefillah Nick Young and Chair of the Norwich Liberal Community Linda Albin. During the study group the participants engaged in a lively discussion on the importance of respectful disagreement and how it has shaped Jewish thought and tradition over the centuries. The session was described as both enlightening and thought-provoking, setting the tone for the day.

Linda said: “We felt a deep connection to the past, honouring the contributions of those who came before us. The walk was not just a physical journey but a spiritual one, bringing us closer to our roots and each other. It was a day filled with learning, reflection, and a renewed appreciation for our heritage. We look forward to continuing this tradition and exploring more of our rich history together.”
