6 October 2023 – 21 Tishri 5784

Leo Baeck College was visited by Miguel Berger, Germany’s Ambassador to the UK accompanied by Dr Susanne Frane, Germany’s Head of Culture and Education, during the break between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur.

College Principal Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris gave them a tour of the LBC library at The Sternberg Centre in Finchley, north London where they admired the collection of Hebrew and German bibles and other treasured artifacts. Director of Education Dr Jo-Ann Myers, explained the history of the College.

Rabbi Dr Deborah Kahn-Harris said: “It was an honour to welcome the Ambassador. The story of LBC is rooted in the arrival of German refugees from Nazi Germany. Building new relationships with Germany has always been important to us,” she added.

LBC Librarian Cassy Sachar said it was a delight to discuss the many German Jewish bible translations. “They were intrigued by the items on display particularly a Chanukah greeting sent to German Jewish Soldiers. German Jewish heritage is very much at the heart of so much Jewish scholarship and the library’s history.”
