This weekend is EcoShabbat and Jewish communities around the country will be taking part. It is timed to happen during COP27 when the world’s eyes are focussed on the climate emergency.
Communities of all denominations and all around the UK are taking part by holding services and events where will they will learn, discuss, commit and act in ways to improve sustainability.
At Brighton & Hove Progressive Synagogue, there will be a Friday night service dedicated to the planet followed by vegan supper – with recipes shared afterwards. There is also a ‘Share Plants For Shul’ event, with community members bringing indoor plants to enhance inside space and make as green as possible. Cheder children will look after the plants going forward.
Liberal Judaism CEO Rabbi Charley Baginsky said: “At the heart of nearly every crisis we are seeing in the present, and we can predict for the future, is our relationship to the world and the climate.
“Shabbat is the greatest gift that Judaism gave to the world, a time to recognise the beauty that is the world and that we are both part of creation and responsible for it. EcoShabbat is that reminder on steroids! Liberal Judaism is proud to support and take part in it.”
If you are still finalising what to do, then please head to www.ecosynagogue.org/ecoshabbat – where you will find an EcoShabbat Resource Pack for Communities which includes plenty of ideas, guides and assets for the weekend.
