Liberal Judaism’s series of Open House Shabbats continues this Saturday (3 September) at York Liberal Jewish Community (YLJC).
As part of Liberal Judaism’s 120th anniversary celebrations, YLJC is taking its turn to host a Shabbat morning service with other Liberal communities around the country.
Interfaith friends from York have also been invited to join. As members of the York Interfaith Group, YLJC will use the service to show how the city stands together at this time in the face of anti-religious sentiment about many faiths. It is also an opportunity to re-welcome longstanding friends of the community.
The service will be led by Student Rabbi Rafe Thurstance and start at 11am in-person at the community’s York City Centre venue. There will be a finger bring and share lunch afterwards. Online viewing details will be released shortly. To join the service, please contact YLJC by clicking here.
The Open House Shabbat initiative will see each Liberal Judaism congregation hold at least one Shabbat during the year, for which they will open their doors – whether in-person, online or both – to the rest of the Liberal Jewish world and beyond.
More about York Liberal Jewish Community:
York Liberal Jewish Community aims to provide a friendly Jewish home to any residents, students and visitors to the City of York who identify as Jewish. Founded in 2014, we hold the only regular Jewish services in the city.
Services follow the Liberal tradition, with men and women participating on an equal basis and prayers in English and Hebrew. In addition, evening services tend to include a lot of singing in Hebrew.
We are extremely lucky to be being supported by Liberal Judaism, who ensure we have regular rabbinic support, not just for our Shabbat morning services but also for High Holy Days, festivals, lifecycle events and our term time adult education course, Judaism 101. Our Friday night services and children’s cheder (religion school) are led by community members.
