Rabbi Dow Marmur

Liberal Judaism mourns the passing of Rabbi Dow Marmur – an instrumental figure in rebuilding Jewish life in Europe after the Shoah.

He was a rabbi and teacher to many of us, having served several Progressive Jewish communities in the UK including South West Essex and Settlement Reform Synagogue (SWESRS) and Alyth Synagogue.

Born in Poland in 1935, Dow Marmur spent the years of World War II in the Soviet Union before returning to his home country in 1946.

Two years later, he emigrated to Sweden, where he went to school. In 1957, he moved to London, England, to study for the rabbinate at Leo Baeck College. He was ordained by LBC in 1962 and later taught there.

After emigrating to Canada, he became senior rabbi of Holy Blossom Temple in Toronto from 1983-2000. He then retired to Israel.

Liberal Judaism will remember Rabbi Dow Marmur as an inspirational leader and teacher and send our condolences to his devoted wife Fredzia and beloved children and grandchildren.
