Liberal Judaism’s Rabbi Janet Darley appeared on BBC2’s Sunday Morning Live this week.
In a special edition based around refugees, Janet looked at the moral dimension and faith response to the current crisis and opposition to current Government plans that will no longer guarantee many refugees safety in the UK.
Janet told how there are a lot of faith leaders and organisations speaking out against the Government’s plans, including a statement put out by Liberal Judaism CEO Rabbi Charley Baginsky.
Janet added: “Fundamentally, this is a moral issue and we lose the plot a little bit if we try to turn it into just strictly a fiscal one.
“In Judaism, 36 times Torah commands to protect the stranger, to offer sanctuary to the stranger. Saving human life is of primary importance. Talmud teaches us ‘whoever saves a single human life it is though they have saved an entire world, and whoever allows a single human life to perish it is though they have destroyed an entire world.’
“So to really concentrate on these ethical moral responsibilities is important. But of course, all these refugees will also become tax payers and add to life in the UK.”
Janet also spoke about refugees she has seen resettled who are now teachers, doctors and engineers or studying to enter those professions.
