The members of East London & Essex Liberal Synagogue (ELELS) have had plenty of reason to celebrate in July.

Launching hybrid services earlier this month, they have already had a barmitzvah and batmitzvah take place inside the synagogue.

This Shabbat saw Rabbi Richard Jacobi lead the service in the sanctuary along with batmitzvah girl Naomi – who has grown up in the congregation.

Naomi (pictured) was joined by her two older brothers, parents and grandparents along with her batmitzvah teacher, and ELELS Community Development Manager, Nick Young.

The rest of the congregation were able to Zoom into service, and a complete morning of activities, from the comfort of their own homes.

Ben Glassman, the new chair of ELELS, said: “We are delighted that we’ve been able to hold our first in-person services for more than a year.

“We are working hard to offer a service that mixes something new and something familiar for everyone joining us, in whatever medium they choose. These first steps have been very well received.”
