The Liberal Synagogue Elstree (TLSE) kicked off its 50th anniversary celebrations with a special Civic Service.

The community welcomed the Lord Lieutenant of Hertfordshire, Robert Voss; The Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Brenda Batten; and the Town Mayor of Borehamwood, Councillor Victor Eni.

They were joined for Shabbat by some of the synagogue’s founding members as well as Liberal Judaism’s senior rabbi, Rabbi Danny Rich, president Rabbi Dr Andrew Goldstein and chair Simon Benscher.

Prayers were led by TLSE’s Rabbi Pete Tobias, whose thought-provoking Passover-themed sermon urged listeners to remember that slavery still exists and we should all continue to work toward freedom and equality.

The service was followed by a kiddush, which was served by the synagogue’s Kabbalat Torah class.

The 50th anniversary celebrations in Elstree will continue with many events over the coming year.
