South London Liberal Synagogue (SLLS) was part of a unique project that saw 2,000 handmade Stars of David hung throughout Pittsburgh.

The children of SLLS joined 1,000 young volunteers around the world making the stars, each with a heart in the centre.

The project was created by Americans Hinda Mandell and Ellen Dominus Broude, who set up a Facebook page entitled ‘Jewish Hearts from Pittsburgh’ in response to the attack at the Tree of Life synagogue building in the Squirrel Hill.

They said: “The purpose of this craft-activism project is to embed love into the Jewish Star (the Star of David).”

The stars were distributed and hung by a further 40 volunteers on the first night of Chanukkah.
