Finchley Progressive Synagogue (FPS) is hosting a series of events around key Israeli anniversaries in October and November to which all members of Liberal Judaism are invited.
The first is a set of four evening talks, by eminent speakers, to mark the centenary of the Balfour Declaration. They will take place weekly on Thursday evenings at 7.30pm at FPS, which is located at 54 Hutton Grove, N12 8DR. A £5 voluntary donation on the door is asked for to cover refreshments. The four talks are:
Thursday 19 October – From Herzl to Balfour: The Fulfilment of a Dream, delivered by Rabbi Dr Frank Hellner
Thursday 26 October – Zionism Without Zion: What If There Had Been No Balfour Declaration, delivered by Maureen Kendler of the London School of Jewish Studies
Thursday 2 November – From Balfour to Independence: A Tale of Two Declarations, delivered by Liberal Judaism officer and head of the UJIA Centre for Israel Engagement Robin Moss
Thursday 9 November – The Balfour Declaration and the Jewish Legion: The Origins of the Jewish Defence Forces, delivered by SOAS’ Professor Colin Shindler
FPS will also host a commemorative event to mark the 50th anniversary of the Six Day War on Sunday November 19.
Taking place at the synagogue from 7,45pm, it will include an interview with Professor Colin Shindler, looking at how the war changed the Middle East up to the present day, a day by day film of how events unfolded and video message from Israelis who were there.
The cost is £7.50 and the evening will include Israeli-style refreshments.
