Kabbalat Torah celebration in East London

The community at East London & Essex Liberal Synagogue have enjoyed their first Kabbalat Torah celebration – as a group of 15-year-olds led a fun and spiritual service.

Unique to Liberal Judaism, Kabbalat Torah is a two year programme leading on from bar/batmitzvah. At the age of 15, it is felt that students are able to have a more mature and personal understanding of Jewish values and are able to affirm their commitment to Judaism as a consequence of a personal decision.

During their studies, the EL&ELS group (pictured above with Rabbi Richard Jacobi) looked into Jewish ethics and morals and what it means to be Jewish in the 21st century. The course included a trip to Amsterdam.

After the service, the students were presented with certificates by joint cheder head teacher Rachel Kamall, before enjoying Kiddush.

EL&ELS member Merle Muswell said: “It was a fabulous morning with all generations learning and celebrating together. We are now looking forward to seeing many of the Kabbalat Torah group return to cheder to help teach others.”

East London & Essex Liberal Synagogue was formed in January this year when Woodford Liberal and Bet Tikvah Synagogues voted to unite.
