Statement from Rabbi Danny Rich, Senior Rabbi and Chief Executive of Liberal Judaism.
Liberal Judaism heard with great concern of the decision of Judge Jackson in case of J -v- B yesterday.
While the judge had a difficult decision to make in interests of the welfare of the children Liberal Judaism is saddened by the judgement which might give succour to those who wish to discriminate against transgender parents and condemns any community leader who threatens to ostracise children and to use them as pawns in medieval game playing.
Liberal Judaism affirms the right of children to access parents including transgender parents and hope that all religious and community leaders will enable parents to have the opportunity to see to their children, regardless of the sexual orientation or gender identity of the parent.
Perhaps we might recall the prophetic view: “Elijah will turn the hearts of parents to their children, and the hearts of children to their parents” (Malachi 3:24)
