Joyce Rothschild, of Birmingham Progressive Synagogue, has been awarded a British Empire Medal in the Queen’s New Year’s Honours list.

Joyce received the honour as a result of her remarkable annual quiz, which has been running for 20 years and has raised more than £120,000 in the fight against cancer.

Joyce began the quiz two decades ago to buy equipment for Birmingham’s Queen Elizabeth Hospital, where she was treated for an aggressive form of breast cancer. Since then, all the money raised has gone to Macmillan Cancer Support. The quiz attracts entries from all over the country and from keen challengers abroad.

Joyce, 60, said: “I am very honoured to receive this award but I feel my many loyal helpers also deserve a medal for making such an achievement possible.”

Joyce is a stalwart member of Birmingham Progressive Synagogue, where she is co-leader of the choir.
