Luciana Berger MP joined Rabbis Danny Rich, Alex Wright and René Pfertzel – as well as Reform and Orthodox Jews, and members of three other faiths – to wrap festive presents for refugees at The Liberal Jewish Synagogue (LJS) on Mitzvah Day.

Hundreds of books were brought to the LJS, which were then wrapped by the interfaith team for the charity Salusbury World, which works to support and empower refugee and migrant children, young people and families to overcome obstacles, realise their rights and potential and participate fully in society.

It was one of 380 Mitzvah Days taking place in the UK, many at Liberal communities stretching from Brighton to Edinburgh.

A slideshow of some of the wonderful Mitzvah Day activities in Liberal Judaism’s communities – inclding York, Northwood & Pinner and Woodford Liberal Synagogues – can be seen on our Facebook page here.

Luciana, who is MP for Labour & Cooperative MP for Liverpool, said: “Mitzvah Day is so important as it’s such a wonderful opportunity to bring people together, from the Jewish community and beyond, to do good deeds and make a positive contribution locally. This is so important for the Jewish community, allowing us to share our traditions, customs and religion. I very much enjoyed meeting some wonderful members of the LJS.”

Crouch End Chavurah joined in the LJS Mitzvah Day event, by collecting more than 50 bags of toiletries for The Liberal Jewish Synagogue Drop-In for Asylum Seeker Families – which were then delivered by Rabbi Danny Rich, the senior rabbi of Liberal Judaism.
